Barn Island Management Area Boat Launch, Stonington CT: Directions from Rhode Island from Rt 95, leave at Exit 91 (this avoids traffic), swing left and left again at the stop light to head east on Rt 234 for ¼ mile, turn right (south) on Farmholme Rd. At Rt 1, jog right to the stop light and turn left onto Greenhaven Rd. Immediately (only 100 ft) take right on Palmerneck Rd. If you are coming from the southern part of RI, go thru the Westerly/Pawcatuck area on Rt 1 heading toward Stonington. Go to the traffic light just past the Wequetequock Fire Station in Stonington. Turn left onto Greenhaven Rd. Immediately (only 100 ft) take right on Palmerneck Rd. Follow signs to the Barn Island Launch which always appears to be a long, long, way down at the very end of the road.
In the spring of 2004 the launch area was improved for the trailer crowd. The new paved parking lot has marked space for about 50 or more trailers, but only 4 cars. There are now two docks and a triple concrete ramp. Kayakers in a group should double up in the trailer parking slots to save space, especially on summer weekends. This is a very popular launch area. There are two portable outhouses on site.
